James & Olivia - Proposal on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Early morning at Lake Atitlán is calm in a way that doesn’t last long. The light is soft, the water still, and the villages along the shore feel almost paused.
James and Olivia crossed the lake by boat from Santa Catarina Palopó to Santa Cruz la Laguna just after sunrise. The proposal took place at Paxanax dock, a simple structure along the shoreline with an open view toward the volcanoes. There was no décor beyond a subtle arrangement of petals. We bought those petals at the market ourselves, got to the dock early and set them up, but we wanted something simple, nothing to distract from the setting or the moment itself.
After the proposal, we stayed near the water for a series of portraits by the lake, then photographed the crossing back to Santa Catarina with our cameras and the drone. The boat ride offered a different rhythm: movement, wind, and changing light as the lake slowly came to life.
We finished the session walking through Santa Catarina Palopó, using the streets, textures, and murals as a contrast to the quieter landscape of Santa Cruz. The combination of locations gave the story a natural progression—from stillness to color, from open space to detail.
Lake Atitlán works best when it’s approached simply. The setting does enough on its own. This proposal was about timing, restraint, and letting the place shape the experience.
James and us went over the plan for thebig moment over a few emails, and we helped him with ideas, recommendations and planning. Proposals can be nerve-racking, but having all the details and times straight can help turning them into one of the most memorable moments of someone’s life. It’s always a true honor to witness these moments and help make them a reality.
